This Light of Mine

This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine…

Do you love yourself? What is the importance of loving oneself? Are you afraid to be who you really are? Are you afraid of judgement from others?

I think most of us have been told that it is important to love ourselves. But what does that really mean? What does it mean to be true to thyself? I’m still learning the answers to these questions myself. Maybe it is a moment by moment process of being gentle and easy with ourselves.

We live in what seems to be a comparison-based culture. Almost from birth, children are compared to each other in attempt to figure out if one is normal. Children are categorized by their size, how soon they learn to talk or walk. It continues throughout our school years and well into adulthood.

Maybe it is an attempt to understand ourselves and each other. At some point, we figure out that we are different from each other in one way or another. Then we beat up on ourselves for not being over-achievers, for not always achieving or surpassing desired outcomes. Women often starve themselves in an attempt to achieve an unrealistic body image. Men engage in other types of behaviors to prove that they are “real men.” Regardless, I think people have a hard time loving themselves based on imposed societal standards of beauty, health, wealth, and success.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we really knew that we were good enough and worthy of love just because we exist? Not because we meet some standard, but just because we are each unique beloved children of the universe.

How would we let our light shine if we did not fear judgement? What would it feel like to know that we couldn’t get it wrong? I intend to be true to myself now and in the future, loving myself more and cutting myself some slack if I don’t meet a societal standard. Maybe the only standard we need to meet is to be true to ourselves, to love ourselves as we are, and to follow our heart.

I would love to hear your thoughts regarding self-love and how you are going to let your light shine in 2018 and beyond.

Much love and appreciation for you and this magnificent unfolding of standing in our truth and shining our light… Namaste
